‘Trust you to bunk off to a burger restaurant with a couple of gays when my back’s turned’ said Emily.’ What on earth’s been going on and why all the cloak and dagger stuff about not being followed?’

April recounted the whole story. Emily became quiet and tried to concentrate on her driving, glancing nervously in the rear view mirror.

‘They couldn’t have been police. Who were they and why should they want to kill you?’

‘I’ve no idea but they were well organised. They knew exactly where I was and the moment when I was on my own. Thinking about it, I bet the woman who took me down to the front door was one of them. They already had a bulldozer driver waiting at the dump. If he hadn’t refused to drive, I would be in the rubbish tip now.’

’You would have disappeared and no one would have known what had happened,’ said Emily thoughtfully. ‘Someone wants you out of the way for good. You’d better stick close to me from now on. There are some very dangerous people about. Maybe we should report it to the police.’

‘They said they were the police.’

Back at the safe house, Emily stared out of the window frowning with determination and trying to collect her thoughts. They went over the incident again and again to try and understand who was behind it. Eventually they gave up and decided to say nothing to anyone. April would go ahead with the forthcoming television interview.

June 7th

Can things get any worse than being kidnapped, shot and buried in a rubbish tip? It’s the worst nightmare come true and I want to talk to Sarah and Richard about it but I can’t because I have to prepare for the television interview in the morning – my life is no longer my own and I’m sure things are going to get worse. I want to run away but I don’t know how. Emily has changed ­– she’s no longer breezy and confident. She’s badly rattled and obviously regretting this whole publicity thing. The situation is sapping my confidence – I must try to be strong –
